German Grand Prix 2018
The German Grand Prix was held again in Wedel over the Whitsun weekend from 18-20 May. In a relaxed atmosphere, despite all the sporting ambition, 24 group matches were played, followed by seven knockout matches.
In the end, the winner was an outstanding Lukas Stamm, who delivered all the best performances:
GD: 1.389, BED: 3.00 (!) & HS: 15 (!!!) (both in the semi-final against Michel Puse).
His opponent in the final and runner-up was Frank Sudar, who put up resistance right to the end in a thrilling final. However, the final series of 8 at 18:29 came a little too late. Final score: 30:26 in 29/28 shots
Before that, he had eliminated Cengiz Karaca in the semi-final, who seemed to be slightly favoured after the games played up to that point (average > 1.4).
The two semi-finals ended:
Karaca | 28 | 27 | 1,037 | 3 |
Sudar | 30 | 27 | 1,111 | 6 |
und
Stamm | 30 | 10 | 3,0 | 15 |
Puse | 10 | 9 | 1,111 | 6 |
The overall results can be found in the Billardarea http://portal.billardarea.de/cms_single/show/11773 or are summarised compactly http://portal.billardarea.de/img/bms/uploads/tournamentfiles/13465319241680479593.pdf . A nice report (thanks Markus) can also be found at http://www.kozoom.com/de/billard-karambol/news/lukas-stamm-ba-berlin-gewinnt-1-ggp-in-wedel.html.
A few pictures from the tournament weekend as well as videos of the HF and Finlae with Lukas (incl. 15 series) will follow.
The ‘relaunch’ of the GGP was welcomed by all participants, even if there are still some blurriness or suggestions from the participants regarding the announcement and mode, which should perhaps be considered in the future:
Keywords (without separate scoring):
- Quarter-finals according to the final ranking list after the group matches or draws (vs. fixed pairings based on a rigid tuning scheme)
- extra shots and possibly shoot-outs (vs. NO extra shots in knockout matches) – the additional time required is hardly significant
- Binding regulation (and publication) of the dress code in the invitation to tender
- Playing the second group match seeded against LOSER (vs. group header – WINNER, which may make the third match superfluous)
- Increase to 32 participants and thus 8 groups of four, from each of which two advance
or also
- 6 groups of four with 24 participants plus an additional round of 16…
- Increase the distance in the knockout matches
- significantly earlier invitations to tender for planning security for organisers and players
- thus also avoiding double bookings of the date (the Bavarian State Championship took place at the same time as this GGP…)
- earlier end of enrolment and thus group division, in order to make it easier for group heads to plan overnight stays and travel.
- …
We think that a good start has been made for this tournament series and as a club we would welcome the opportunity to organise it again.
Many thanks to all the club’s supporters and helpers, without whom such an event would not be possible. But also a big compliment to the players: You were relaxed despite perhaps a teething problem or two and made our job as hosts decidedly easy. See you hopefully next year!
